BETWEEN THE LIONS: Get Wild About Reading
The award-winning Between the Lions Web site offers tons of expert-approved games, stories, video clips, and activities—all aimed at reinforcing the literacy mission of the series. The games focus on a variety of educational areas, as do the video clips, which are taken from the shows. The stories—featuring everything from new books to old folk tales to original and classic yarns—introduce kids to a wide variety of storytelling methods and subject matters. Accompanying each story is a story-specific game to extend either the vocabulary or phonics found in the story itself. This site has two main areas: the Kids area and a Parents & Teachers section, which houses lots of information about the program and the Web site. An area of special note is Lions To Go, featuring free downloadable songs, stories, and more.

MATH IN DAILY LIFE
When you buy a car, follow a recipe, or decorate your home, you're using math principles. People have been using these same principles for thousands of years, across countries and continents. Whether you're sailing a boat off the coast of Japan or building a house in Peru, you're using math to get things done. How can math be so universal? First, human beings didn't invent math concepts; we discovered them. Also, the language of math is numbers, not English or German or Russian. If we are well versed in this language of numbers, it can help us make important decisions and perform everyday tasks. Math can help us to shop wisely, buy the right insurance, remodel a home within a budget, understand population growth, or even bet on the horse with the best chance of winning the race. Explore how math can help us in our daily lives. At Math In Daily Life, you'll look at the language of numbers through common situations, such as playing games or cooking. Put your decision-making skills to the test by deciding whether buying or leasing a new car is right for you, and predict how much money you can save for your retirement by using an interest calculator.

READ ACROSS AMERICA
The National Education Association's Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. NEA's Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year. In cities and towns across the nation, teachers, teenagers, librarians, politicians, actors, athletes, parents, grandparents, and others develop NEA's Read Across America activities to bring reading excitement to children of all ages. Governors, mayors, and other elected officials recognize the role reading plays in their communities with proclamations and floor statements. Athletes and actors issue reading challenges to young readers. And teachers and principals seem to be more than happy to dye their hair green or be duct-taped to a wall if it boosts their students' reading.
